Neighborhood Play: Solutions From Adults and High School Students

- A High School Student Panel will discuss experiences growing up as panel members gained freedom to play apart from their parents.

While I strongly support neighborhood play, I think parents should consider some rules for ball games. Roller-blade hockey, for instance, can be a hazard for both parked cars and small children when played in the street by energetic 10-year-olds. Portable basketball hoops are often placed at the street curb, and when older teens play basketball, younger children are not able to use the sidewalk without risk of being hit. I think we should be clear that not all ages have equal needs for neighborhood play.
